How can I retrieve old Outlook emails between 2002-2013?

My great-uncle is terminally ill. He created his @hotmail.com before 2002, but 2013 is the year of the earliest email on outlook.com. We don't think he created any .PST files.

1. What happened to the emails before 2013? Did Outlook automatically delete them?

2. How can we see and save the emails before 2013?
