Google Sheets, downloaded and opened in Excel 2021 (Office Pro Plus LTSC) - unable to edit in Excel? [closed]

A shared Google Sheets spreadsheet with 10 tabs and several custom formulas for averages, annual YTD totals, couple charts is periodically downloaded to have a backup also on a laptop in case web connection is down or "just to have multiple backups".

The largest sheet has today about 1,600 rows and data in 18 columns. So not a very large sheet.

The laptop in question is a late model LG, Windows 11 Pro, 32 gb RAM, 1 TB SSD so not a total sloth.

When I open this downloaded .xlsx file, it starts up with a twirling "wait wait.." circling icon and about 10 minutes pass, before I see a normal mouse pointer. When I try to access any cell(s), it results in another wait mode so I really can not even resize cells for readability, nor can I easily switch to another tab (takes several minutes).

Even just opening this downloaded .xlsx and trying to exit Excel causes a 10 minute wait before a Save prompt shows up and Excel closes. Repeat and rinse, same result over and over.

Is it possibly the code in Google Sheets that kills the performance in Excel 2021 ?

What I can do (and resorted to doing..), is to manually copy the page for cells/rows separately while in Google Sheets and then manually paste these into a blank Excel sheet, one at a time. This of course loses all of the code but at least I have a record of the data for the rows and columns.

Is there a better way to figure out what kills Excel 2021 ? CPU is not being pegged out based on event log and Bitsum Processlasso shows only about 8% of CPU is used.
