bulk delete of old emails using a date range doesn't delete them, [closed]

I followed the steps on How to delete a range of emails in Gmail, but it doesn't work.

If I just enter the date range in the search field it pulls up emails from every folder, not just the inbox which will delete all emails for the date range from every email folder, not just the inbox. I only want to delete the ones from the inbox.

If I use the filter "In:Inbox" to tag just emails in the inbox, the process completes without deleting anything.

Not about to spend a lot of time deleting page by page.
