Facebook has merged two logins, so my friend cannot get into her account

A friend of mine is locked out of Facebook. This is what she suspects is the cause:

  1. When I got my phone I tried to log in from it.
  2. It created instead a new account, with a full stop in the email address. I use Gmail, so this wasn't an issue — but I never used that new account.
  3. At that time (last year), Facebook, like most of the internet, thought the address with the full stop in it was a different account, but
  4. At some point in the past few months, they fixed that, thereby creating two accounts with essentially the same email, so that
  5. They will only let me log into the newer, unused account, even though I use the exact ID of the old, correct account in Google.

All this has resulted in

  1. I am locked out of everything except the bogus account, on three different operating systems, on three separate devices.

A friend of hers went to the correct account and tried to restore it, but Facebook still logged her into the bogus account when the process was run through from the real account.

Is there any way my friend can restore access to her old Facebook account?
