How to edit cell contents / type in cell without double clicking or pressing enter in Google Sheets

I have google sheets on my mac, and have this spreadsheet that I've been working on. Previously, I was able to add content to an empty cell just by clicking on the cell / having the cell selected, and typing, or rewriting what is in a cell with the same process. Today, when I went to the same spreadsheet, I discovered that I am unable to do this, and now have to double click or press enter to edit the contents of a cell, or to type something into it.

I've went back to a number of my spreadsheets, which I was previously able to add / edit the contents of cells without double clicking or pressing enter. However, this change seems to be common across all of my spreadsheets now.

Double clicking and pressing enter are a bit of a hassle compared to being able to arrow key to whatever cell you want and typing in the contents. Are there some settings that I may have changed, and how do I go back to the previous way of editing cells?

EDIT: I've discovered that opening the same spreadsheet in Chrome allows me to edit the old way. However, I use Safari more often so if anyone knows how I can edit the same way in Safari, that would be appreciated.
